Times of Malta first reported that Renzi was coming. Letta isn’t a surprise. This sort of conference is habitually stuffed with former PMs. The current ones usually have other things to do.

The only sitting PM at the conference will be the one who paid for it using other people’s money

One Italian newspaper recently showed a photo of young Renzi when he was a boy scout. The caption read that he was already a leader even at that stage.

It did not indicate, however, whether he then already possessed the gift of the gab he exercises so flippantly in his adulthood.

Whether he can now, or in the near future, deliver on his promises of reform, update, and stable economy has still to be seen, of course. I do not think he has measured the opposition’s capacity to undo them at the flick of a finger.

What we do know for sure is that, like Dom did in Malta back in 1947 when he back-stabbed his party leader, Dr Paul Boffa, Renzi has ousted Pier Luigi Bersani as PD Secretary and Enrico Letta as Prime Minister, almost at one go.

It would seem Italians have a soft spot for mavericks whom they regard as saviours of their fatherland. It was that way back in the last century, during the twenties with Benito and pretty much similiarly in the nineties with Silvio.

I would therefore take Wenzu Mintoff’s ‘fiducja’ with much more than just a pinch of salt.
