There seems to be conflicting information on the “big news” which Joseph Muscat will announce tomorrow as reported in the local media following Joseph Muscat’s speech this afternoon.

The Malta Independent says:

“Addressing a political event at Naxxar this evening, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that on Wednesday, the government will be introducing a new an investment that will prove beneficial for many families. He did not give any hints as to what this might be.”

TMI then deals with investments in Air Malta in a way it seems this is something different from the “big news.”

In its biblical style, Times of Malta seems to be tieing the “big news” to Air Malta. However, I have my doubts the two are related.

In am going to make a calculated guess about the “big news.”

I think that the news relates to the export of solar energy. I think that Joseph Muscat has been negotiating with China to install Chinese solar panels on private properties in Malta where solar energy can be generated.

“The agreement reached with a Chinese power company last Wednesday will enable Malta to export energy – solar energy – in the near future, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this morning.”

I suspect that Joseph Muscat is planning to use the interconnector to sell solar energy during daytime, and buy cheap energy during the night.

Now I am not clear how the families would benefit, but it could be that families and businesses would be asked to rent roof space, or to buy panels and sell units generated to government.

I think that somehow the price of the panels will be paid for or subsidised by China.

Let’s wait and see.
