Well I mean, lets face it, George Abela was a parochial dinosaur.

I’ll never forget how he welcomed the Pope to Malta in the immediate wake of the child abuse scandals, and insisted that Malta was predominantly Catholic and had to “fight” the onslaught of secularism.

He waxed lyrical about that idiot in a pointy hat who, it was revealed, had ordered top secrecy among clergy with the threat of excommunication should they break ranks and give evidence about abuse cases. He did, in all fairness, truly represent Malta and the Maltese in all their ignorant, backward, archaic glory.

And he’s also the ignoramus who, in the 21st century, was still very publicly opposed to civil unions. Out with the old, in with the new. Good riddance to him.

Yes, he succeeded in thing for sure: that of creating an institute, complete with state-of-the-art building, for the treatment of eating disorders (of all disorders!), managed and run (with all the attendant training abroad) by his daughter-in-law's sister, all funded by the Community Chest Fund.

Perhaps Marc Sant ought to wait before being too sure that Marie Louise Coleiro is better than George Abela.

Being a militant does not really make a unifying figurehead. I believe George Abela succeeded were others did not. The rest is yet to be seen.
