This smacks of a serious lack of how any military command structure operates. With so many “accelerated” promotions the command structure will be seriously compromised in regards to competence and just basic knowledge of how a battalion or regiment operates. It is a given that the rank and file will treat these promotions with the utmost disdain and disrespect behind their backs.

Staff college training, fit for purpose promotions, methinks not!

In reply to Joe Fenech. Having said that, promotion of party lackeys were the order of the day under PN. Being being more tactful does not make one less corrupt. The Maltese need severe mentality adjustment in order for all this to cease.

In 1793 Arthur Wellesley was promoted from captain to major and then to lieutenant colonel in the British army in the space of a year.

This meteoric rise was frowned upon then and still is within certain upper circles of HM armed forces.

Wellesley was accused of having purchased his rank with his brother’s money. This was common practice in those days.

Arthur somewhat redeemed himself by rising to become one of the greatest military strategists and commanders of all time.

His tactics, especially in defensive warfare, are studied to this very day in all military academies worthy of that name worldwide.

He most certainly changed the course of European history.

Perhaps Manwel Mallia has identified another “Beakie” this time round within the AFM.

Time will tell.

We’ve gone stark raving bonkers in this country with people who are over 70 now back in the police force.

They might include some of the old untrained police officers from the golden years, when it was fashionable to shoot tear gas, buck shot and beat up those who stood in the government’s way.

And what is more, these long-since-retired officers need no training. So the next time a uniformed officer who looks more like a mouldy prune asks you to stop, you had better do so. No, you are not on candid camera.

To join the army at the rank of captain on account of a first degree is one thing, which I assume was the case here. To ignore the seniority of equally ranked officers and to get further promotions on account of your political affiliations is another matter entirely.

Within all of three years in the army, Capt. Agius has managed to achieve the rank of lieut. colonel, that is just two ranks below the rank of Brigadier. This means that she commissioned in 2011 – how many promotions could she have been entitled to and was reasonably passed over, assuming that she was?

These sort of promotions would break the spine of any professional army, let alone our armed forces which are fast becoming armed farces instead. Not only are the upper ranks filled with political appointments, but the lower ranks are also filled with armed and dangerous racist bigots. I truly feel sorry for those career soldiers and officers who are honourable and dutiful soldiers and whose rights are being trodden upon.

This is all so banana republic like – from zero to hero in just a few years.
