We seem to be stretching the label of democracy very thinly. But come to think of it the Congo, Yemen, Laos, China and a few others, also call themselves democracies. Aren’t we in good company?

We are back to the days of “Mhux fl-interess tal-poplu,” which should elicit the rejoinder, “In whose interest is it to keep secret the amount, in cash or kind, that the government decides to give to selected persons when this comes from taxes paid by the “poplu”?

How in the name of all the constellations can the full employment contract of a senior officer of a public authority – paid from public funds – be kept a secret or considered to be confidential?

This is ultimately a matter that must be scrutinised by the Auditor General and should, under normal circumstances, end up in his report, which is also public.

Any government minister who comes up with this sort of utter nonsense should be publicly shamed by the Opposition.
