This should be the Opposition’s new chant.

An engineer friend of mine once explained to me that when a distributor breaks down, Enemalta transfers the demand of the affected area to other distributors. Had it not be possible, he explained, blackouts would be much longer.

I can only speculate but it could be that we had an extended nationwide blackout because somebody at Enemalta messed up. After the initial blackout, he lacked the knowhow to transfer the load to other distributors to allow return to normality in the shortest time possible.

Note also that the new CEO is very much a Taghna Lkoll man. Previously, he was in the civil service meaning that his knowledge and experience of energy distribution is nil. He is also a PL activist. Could this have been the cause of such an extended blackout?

That is what you get when you appoint people with no knowledge or experience in key positions. It was a political appointment. There should be political responsibility for the blunders of a political appointee.

Simply because a buried cable shorts shouldn’t cause the main bus bar to melt or, as seems the case here, vaporise.

Call it an absolute lack of maintenance and evident lack of investment.

There was an ongoing comprehensive replacement and upgrading programme, once. What with loads increasing every year. It’s about balancing and predicting these events.
