I wish they had put them back to sea a bit further out.

Where they could escape recapture: left to die slowly on their backs for a week, and then served as a stew with orange and chocolate as a local speciality.

They were a delicacy in Gozo at least until the 1970s. In fact, the first time I saw a live (and rather large) turtle was when it was being beheaded – presumably for soup – in Marsalforn in the early 1970s.
