Vilified = unjustly abused. This isn't vilification, but fair criticism. And very mild and implicit at that.

Laugh at what?

At seeing your country being vilified internationally because of a government that is not fit for purpose.

Laugh because your fellow Maltese have decided to entrust the running of your homeland to a bunch of criminal, corrupt clowns.

This is no laughing matter.

On the contrary.

Suddenly, Konrad Mizzi's banging pales into silence following those three loud bangs.

Actually, I am starting to wonder if each daily political mishap is just an attempt to distract us from that of the previous day, thus keeping us in a state of continuous political distraction. Let's face it, ever since March 2013 its been one crisis after the other.

PERSONAL NOTE - Please bring back the next and previous article links. It makes going through a couple days worth of articles so much easier when one needs to catch up. It was a really practical feature! Thanks.

Whether it was a 'cover-up' or 'a mistake that was corrected' is arguable to the point of nausea. What is clear is that the minister's first public utterances were in praise of his driver. And all that followed was directly or indirectly in his defence.

This is a no-no. This shows he had not fathomed the gravity of the matter and was intent on giving his driver the support he needed.

The PM did not help much by telling us the following day how 'angered and disgusted' the minister was. On the contrary, this only served to shine a brighter light on what the minister had actually said a day earlier.

This is one circle you cannot sqaure.

It's good that these shenanigans have been condemned by the majority. This is not the USA, where police thugs are allowed to run loose, shooting and beating whoever they deem disrespectful.

This nation still believes that the police are here to serve and protect.

Let us not create a mini police state where armed demi-gods rule the streets with the consent and protection of our elected representatives. This is how it starts - a minister defending an empowered thug with ego issues. And to think that it would have been brushed aside had everyone remained silent!

It is worth keeping in mind that Malta already has a high police-to-citizen ratio. Moreover, we've imported several tyrannical laws from our mentors in the West - laws that are interpretable in diverse contexts, or that erase fundamental common law principles, such as the reversal of onus of proof, the 'war on cash', and the unleashing of pervasive, secret surveillance with the potential for political targetting.

Freedom is not lost in a day. Tyranny creeps up society's spine gradually and unnoticeably. Armed thugs in uniform usually follow.
