That’s what happens when you speak English so badly – ‘from the North’ means literally that. Snowy the polar bear, for instance, or Gunnar from Greenland. Or you might be in Devon and speaking about somebody from Yorkshire.

Sicilians live further north than we do, but we don’t say they’re from the North.
