How could I? That’s just a meeting of Commonwealth leaders. You cannot be critical of a meeting. If anything, I would be critical of some of the leaders who are allowed to attend.

If I remember well (I’m into triple-digit tweets now), I raised some doubts about Phyllis Muscat’s suitability for the job. That was the last time I spoke to the good and tolerant people at CHOGM 2015, because I was blocked soon afterwards.

All that talk about how wonderful the Commonwealth is, and what a great opportunity it is for our country to be hosting it, is bullshit. The Commonwealth is about shared institutional and social values – British values, as it happens – and about shared values of governance. Taking a bit of criticism is the least of things that any Commonwealth government should submit to. Indeed, it should embrace it.

I salute Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who fully embraces those Commonwealth values. I salute those countries who share those values. But I think I shall pass all the others who don’t, including my own. We should hang our heads in shame, not strut about the place as if the Commonwealth was our idea.
