In reply to Francis Saliba M.D.. Dear Dr Saliba, the Knight builders of such a magnificent town already have a commemorative memorial that can never be surpassed - St. John's Co-Cathedral. Anything else is unnecessary.

Another person who contributed, and encouraged others to do the same, to the building of Valletta was Pope Pius V.

His bust graced Putirjal, as a gesture of appreciation, until he had to make way for the post-war Fascist-style replacement.

The last I saw this bust was on a plinth like one of the pedestrians that throng Republic Street. Perhaps it’s time to offer him a more elevated position at the new entrance to Valletta.

Having said that, I would also agree to a recreation of the Bofors position at the corner of the bastion overlooking the Grand Harbour, next to the recreated saluting battery.

Aren’t the Knight builders of such a magnificent and imposing fortified town worthy of a commemorative memorial much more than a motley crowd of hawkers is entitled to its ugly and discordant stalls?
