The illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory is Russia’s doing, with unmarked soldiers with sophisticated weapons and a highly organised structure. Innocent people are dying every day in the east of Ukraine and the displaced are in the thousands.

Is it a chip on your shoulder against the Ukrainian citizens and nation or are you in bed with the Russians?

For almost the entire time the PN were in government from 2008, the world was hit by the worst financial crisis in decades. We saw debt go crazy and the whole of Europe and the rest of the world was sentenced to five years of austerity and hardship.

But Malta got through it. This was not because we are insignificant and not all that connected to the rest of the world. We may not be major players in the same way France, the Uk and US are, but we are part of it. Our only income is tourism, and that is not all that reliable.

How did we get through it? Good governance. Ok, so the PN had a few, and literally a few, unpopular ideas regarding things like divorce, but Malta survived because of good housekeeping and prudent spending.

But that was not the only thing. Since the PN are held to such high standards by their supporters and by the opposition alike, there existed the correct – even if somewhat unfair- parameters within which they had to work. Good- that is as it should be.

However, today we have the Labour Party. Let’s take a look at how they fair in terms of being faced with international catastrophe. During the Arab Spring Muscat thought only of capitalising on the lost tourism in the then war torn countries. What about the financial crisis? Wasn’t Muscat keen to copy Cyrus? We all know how that turned out, don’t we.

And now they are in government. Their ineptitude is frustrating, to say the least. For the first time in my life, up until 2013, myself and other Maltese friends of mine were all dropping the “Malta and anything Maltese is automatically bad” expectations of our country because, what do you know, we were actually coming up with good ideas that made the country work.

Labour have dragged us all the way back to pre 2000 days where everything Maltese was underwhelming, tacky and stupid because Mintoff’s mentality was still prevalent and we were still slowly climbing out of it. Muscat is pulling us all the way back to not being able to trust our ideas and doubt our confidence in ourselves as a nation. These issues which are so easy to get right, are done badly and the result is all wrong and embarrassing.

What does this mean for Malta? We are distracted by such ineptitude that we forget that we live not far from one of the most inhumane groups of people on the planet today; ISIS.

Do I trust Muscat on this issue? No. Why should I? Because whenever there is an international issue he can’t resort to his amateur ways. He is held up to the high standards he should be, and he just can’t navigate his way around them.

No, I don’t think he wants Malta to be targeted and suffer. But I don’t believe he is capable of even trying to get it right. His past performance on these matters is what is informing my judgment here.

Malta is a soft target. We may not think of ourselves as all too important, but as a soft target goes, we’re the best type. If Malta was on high alert, Malta should have been informed. In other countries they always know what level of warning they are on.

The problem with this issue is that Muscat has not got a single chance to get it wrong. He has to get it right straight away, or there will be massive implications.
