In reply to <a href="https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/2015/03/alternattiva-has-called-on-the-auditor-general-to-investigate-this-governments-entire-2014-amnesty-scheme/#comment-3034611">rob</a>.

I disagree with you on two points.

1. Common sense should tell you that the reason Zammit did not disclose his funds for any one of three Nationalist government amnesties is because he did NOT feel protected and not because he felt protected. If he felt protected, he would have done the obvious thing and disclosed them.

There is a widespread misconception in Malta, I now realise, that it is better to have your money in Switzerland and undeclared than anywhere else and declared (including Switzerland). Except for tax evasion purposes, it is not. When your money is undeclared and hidden in that manner, you are effectively denied free and useful access to it, unless you travel to Switzerland, withdraw large sums of cash, and spend that. That is why so many people literally rush to take up an amnesty - it gives them effective access to their money.

2. Forgiving Zammit and Falzon is neither an issue nor an aim. As politicians, they are finished anyway. The aim for the PN should certainly not be to hold out in the hope that they will be forgiven so that they can take them back or because they are identified with the party. And I don't think it is. Fortunately for the PN, Michael Falzon has been identified with the Labour Party and the anti-Gonzi brigade in general and has, in any case, been out of parliament for almost 20 years now (that's a hell of a long time), while Ninu Zammit habitually kept a low profile which I always thought unusual, though I now realise why he did that. He was in the cabinet for 20 years and in parliament between 1987 and 2013 and yet there are people who, when the news broke, had no idea who he is and had never seen a picture of him.

The most plausible explanation is that Ninu Zammit only considered repatriating his funds (I purposely use repatriating) because of the Swiss Leaks.

He did not apply for an earlier amnesty under the PN either because he felt protected or because he was not aware of the imminent threat to his discovery.

Either way, he used the Labour government amnesty last year because it was his only get-out-of prison card.

AD are right to call for an investigation. Simon Busuttil should back this call.

No doubt there are other politicians from both parties who will yet be discovered on this list.

They will come out one way or another. If Busuttil continues to show that his new leadership is whiter than white then the Maltese will eventually forgive the Ninus and and the Michael Falzons.
