I do know my geography.

Besides which, the closest point does not determine belonging. Is Turkey in Europe? Is Morocco in Europe? Are the Falklands Argentina’s?

I do have a bias. I’m biased against those who assume the rest of the world should take a great interest and know everything about Malta and the Maltese. You’re one of them. You are not to be blamed, because you grew up in a different age. But do ask around among the younger generation. They’ll tell you that to the rest of the world, Malta is unimportant. Deal with it.
