I really cannot see how you reached your conclusions. It is clear that Joseph Muscat and the Labour Party won the last general election by doing much worse than wiping the floor continuously with the Nationalist Party and the government for five long years. They were full-on, all-out destructive, to the point of collaborating openly with the Nationalist Party's 'enemies within'.

This is one field where I do actually know what I am talking about, because it is my sphere of professional interest.

The Opposition's campaign of destruction - it was a scorched-earth approach, really - was so extreme, sustained and wide-reaching that it even covered people who were not politicians but who were perceived as standing in the Labour Party's way to power somehow.

That's how I - a mere columnist and blogger - became a target and even ended up on a billboard with senior PN politicians including the prime minister, and others who the Labour Party wished to turn into figures of hate.

The Labour Party managed to wreak that level of hatred and destruction against a government and party that was largely successful in its governance and policies, and yet you think the PN should try to win by being nice about a government that is clearly corrupt and making (short-sighted and dangerous) policy on the hoof.

The Labour Party managed to turn a tacky Maltese clock worth a few hundred euros into a symbol of Terrible PN Corruption, and you think that the PN should now make nice about the very real and extensive corruption going on today so as to make people like them for their positivity.

Do you know what people will say if they do that? That they're wet. And that's exactly what I would say too.

Your idea/comment is about as deep and based in logic as the fateful 'we need a change' mantra that helped us get lumped with this dreadful Muscat government.

In that I mean no offence at all, but at face value it's just one of those throwaway comments that may be met with agreeing murmurs of 'veru, veru' - and that's it. That's where the substance ends.

That 'same old stuff' was what made today's Malta. The PN always had the right policies. Have a trip through modern history; commence from 21st September 1964 and you will realise that:
1. Everything that has value, be it a policy, a political decision, investment or institution was constructed by a PN government, from Independence day onwards, Central Bank, Malta Development Corporation, the tourist industry, manufacturing industry, financial services, banking (in 1987 we started with 3 banks, today we have 20 banks), the regeneration of grand harbour that transformed it from a black spot to the most beautiful harbour in the world, Airport Terminal, Mater Dei, innumerable new schools, MCAST, University,
EU membership, Euro Zone, Delimara power stations, interconnector, (thus the Marsa plant could be switched off by a pretend-electrician), EU-standard roads, introduced the first environment parliamentary secretary way back in the early 90's (Dr. Stanley Zammit who would hopefully be so happy in a few weeks time seeing Spring hunting going the way of the dinosaurs).
Where I live, my village was a backwaters in the 50's. We did not have tap water, sewer systems, telephone lines and what today is called a road. It took a PN administration to do all this, but the people vote MLP because MLP ministers promise them hunting, money for the village soccer club (I wonder from where the minister got all that money in those days) and bocci club, and 'post ta' woccmenn mal-gvern ghat-tifel'.
Now compare all this and much more to anything that the MLP carried out suc as the closing down of the original MCAST and near closing down of my Alma Mater

Be realistic, zz. Short of a revolution you can't have the party you described above.

Even then, a revolution has its own dynamic with unsavoury results. In real life things evolve. Nobody has a shortcut to Nirvana.

To a large extent there is no 'new' way of doing politics. A party can only be better or worse than the other party(ies).

This can be gauged by a clear vision, sound principles and especially by performance.

We have been promised a 'new way of doing politics' based on accountability, transparency, meritocracy and good governance.

The package came rolled up as a 'movement' (not even a party) that promoted itself almost as the antithesis of its old self.

Two years down the line every decently intelligent person can draw his/her own conclusion as to whether this was what we were expecting from this new way of doing politics.
