So did many others, in private.

Knowledge of Dalli’s corruption was widespread. It was always a matter of ‘there’s no proof’, not ‘come on, he’s innocent’.

Gonzi himself made him resign from the cabinet because of corruption in purchasing travel tickets from his own (‘his daughter’s’) travel agency when he was foreign minister. Everything is an opportunity for a deal with this man. Public office is but the opportunity for new and wider networks. God alone knows now what he leached and got up to when he was parliamentary secretary/cabinet minister responsible for Malta’s business dealings with Libya, where corruption is taken to be normal.

Many businessmen in Malta had direct or indirect experience of it, and the pattern was not much different to the snus affair, just on a smaller scale.

It was Lawrence Gonzi who chose John Dalli for the post of European Commissioner. That was an irresponsible decision because it was quite obvious what would happen. Even if he had been able to control his greed, which past experience says would have been unlikely, he is unfit is so many other ways.

Invariably they prefer to rent an apartment for maximum €1,500 monthly.
