On the 27 October 2007 he was approached by the press and asked how he was able to stand as guarantor for his brother Bastjan for €3.45 million to save Mixer Ltd from liquidation..

His reply was “I worked hard for the past three years and this work with God’s grace is now giving positive results. The curiosity of the person who wrote this article and his accomplices will be answered when the financial accounts of my company will be published as required by law”.

To date it is not known if his company accounts have been published.

My long life has taught me that it is easier to have access to a place if you have someone on the inside to open the door.

Income tax returns show income. The declaration of assets is just that – it lists (or should list) assets.

Silvio, if I were a newspaper editor – and I hope newspaper editors do it because I am not allowed to – the next raft of income tax returns I would request from the Speaker would be Manuel Mallia’s (unfortunately only three years are possible for now – the two he was in parliament and the one before he entered parliament, then we can get a fourth – next year’s) and John Dalli’s, for all the years he was in parliament and the year after he left.

I know you support both, stick up for them (in this forum) and voted for Mallia.

If the income tax returns that have yet to be requested by newspaper editors reveal that, like these two above, they declared unrealistic sums, what will you say?

How come that there was never any suspicion that some politicians were not being totally honest in their declaration?

No. Members of parliament are exempted from the tax laws which protect the data of all others, including other public officers.

Members of parliament are exempted from the laws for reasons that shouldn’t have to be explained.

Editors would not be allowed to request income tax returns of MPs if they were not also allowed to write about the, zz. That should be obvious.

In some countries, they are published automatically. There is no need for editors to make special requests.

Wouldn’t such an act infringe data protection laws?
