Fox-hunting (with dogs/horses) was banned not because foxes are killed or because foxes are in danger of extinction, or because of conservation reasons, but because it is a cruel sport.

It was banned, in other words, because it is cruel and not because it results in the death of a fox.

Killing foxes is allowed. If a fox raids your hen-house every night, you can get out a gun and shoot it dead.

This is not the argument against killing migratory birds during the breeding season. Cruelty doesn’t enter the equation. The reason is 100% conservation-related.

The word ‘murder’ should be used as the collective noun for all birds entering Malta.
