He should have stepped down rather than vote against the will of the people or against his conscience.

That would have been the correct way to handle the situation, and it would also have saved the Nationalist Party from the extreme battering it got in the following general election.

Lawrence Gonzi was not an ordinary member of parliament. He was the prime minister. The prime minister can neither vote against the will of the people nor vote against his conscience.

And by the way, a Liberal would say that a civil right such as Divorce legislation should not rest on the whim of any majority vote. The same applies to the Spring hunting issue where the conditions for a derogation can never be met.

This is not collective punishment, but a suspension of privileges granted to a powerful lobby group after a breach of contract.

When the education ministry fcvked up on EU scholarships back in Lawrence Gonzi’s day, the scholarship scheme was suspended by the EU.

Collective punishment? No. Sensible decision to avoid further fcvk-ups.

With people like you, who needs Labour?

P.S. Lawrence Gonzi did ignore the result of the consultative referendum on divorce. He still voted against in parliament.

Get with the times, Vella. Lawrence Gonzi is no longer party leader.

To put it more simply, the referendum’s purpose (had the No vote won) was to force the Government to remove the legal notice that permits Spring hunting. But with or without the referendum, the Maltese government could have removed it any time it saw fit.
