The statement reflects clearly the mentality in Malta that the environment is some resource to be taken advantage of, not unlike squeezing it like a lemon.

It is the reason why many would not see the result as a big deal: “L-ambjent qieghed hemm biex ingawduh ahna” – so we are going to do with it as we please.

That, unfortunately, is as far most people’s idea of environmentalism goes, without any notions of protecting the environment for its own sake.

I can’t believe these people haven’t a clue what today’s discerning (not necessarily big spending) tourist is after.

So much for rural tourism, country walks, agri-tourism and so on and so forth.

Unlike hotels and restaurants, negative press affect those of us who deal with international companies. Lately it is rather unflattering to be the Maltese in the room. I’m dreading the “stork killing” questions.

May I suggest to the eminent sages running the Malta Hotels & Restaurants Association that they should shout down the UK government’s caveat to British tourists visiting our islands in the next three weeks.

These will be free to safely ramble through our Mediterranean countryside – warts and all – and enjoy themselves in peace and tranquility without being called “rubber jollies” or any other complementary expression (accompanied by unprintable expletives) by the locals.

Incidentally, the members of the MHRA started enjoying a 25% reduction in electricity prices, plus a 5% reduction in water bills, just a few days ago.

How about telling us whether they have simultaneously:

a) increased their employees’ wages/salaries; and

b) decreased their accommodation and catering prices

by that much?

But then the MHRA was lock, stock and barrel behind Muscat in the last general election.

Given his involvement in favour of hunting, this bizarrely medieval declaration fits well in context.
