It seems that apart from some Maltese gay people who maturely go about living their life and minding their own business, most of the Maltese gay society like to be seen, show off, provoke and create controversy.

Malta’s TV stations have been completely taken over by these showy people. And then there are the lackeys (many of whom you mention in your last paragraph) who act like a walking gay parade in an attempt to show how hip they are.

Great that you’re gay, we got it, congratulations, let’s move on now, shall we?

And that, you see, is actually the problem. Religion is not about social acceptance. It is about religion, and the Roman Catholic religion and its many Christian breakaways are not about social acceptance but about its reverse: you have to be prepared to be an outcast and die for your religion.

It is only in Malta, in the contemporary world (perhaps The Philippines?) that Roman Catholicism forms the context of social life and social acceptance.

It is THAT which has to change, and not Roman Catholicism which has to change to accommodate the people in Malta who wish to ‘practise tradition’ (you know, like hunting) while still living according to 21st-century mores in all other respects.

They need to taught that building a normal life outside the (abnormal) religio-traditional context is not going to kill them, that it is actually a desirable thing.

You don’t need to have your rings blessed by a Roman Catholic priest to make your commitment before God. You just make your commitment before God.

If you don’t believe, you’re not in it.

The people who don’t (or refuse to) understand this difference end up reasoning as you do, and as those men with the blessed rings do.

I don’t believe in the fundamental tenets of Roman Catholicism; I never did, not even as a child. I don’t agree with many of its rules.

Do I rail against the Pope and the church hierarchy because I want to consider myself a Roman Catholic but want the belief system changed so that I can believe it too? No.

But then that’s because I don’t feel the need to belong or to identify myself as Roman Catholic. I’m lucky in that I escaped that whole Maltese brainwashing thing while growing up, despite going to a convent school.

If the Roman Catholic Church doesn’t suit them, why do they insist on joining it and staying in it?

What they want is not a religion but social acceptance at every level. They just have to understand that churches by their very nature don’t operate like that.

All Christian churches/denominations started out as breakaways from the Roman Catholic tradition, and some are even breakaways from the breakaways.

They were started by people who understood that if you don’t like it, leave and start your own. And their followers were people who felt the exact same way.

You don’t have to be a Roman Catholic to be a Christian. If Roman Catholicism doesn’t suit certain people, they should try another Christian church.
