It would be very interesting – and informative for the major political parties – if some investigative journalist is given access to invalid votes cast in the referendum and local council elections and sheds some light on the sort of comments voters leave on their ballot papers.

The decision to class them as invalid isn’t taken by the sorters but by the electoral commissioners who, typically, sit down with party representatives who examine each ‘dubious’ vote, one by one.
