I blame one person, who is largely allowed to run rampant – mostly over other people and anything essentially Maltese for having started the course back then.

Not only was he given absolutely free rein under Mintoff, but also Police protection.

The Nationalists then extended the latitude to him.

The rest is a consequence.

The habit of ruining our architectural heritage started thanks to the corrupt and decrepit state Malta was in back in the 80s.

That sort of culture is very hard to get rid of since it suddenly becomes unfair to actually enforce the rules on people.

The culture of cutting corners and doing things illegally is learnt and fostered for so long that turning round and telling people they aren’t allowed to do that any more is harder than it looks.

But at least progress was being made to some extent.

Yes, there was still the problem of over development, but it was under some sort of control.

Now the floodgates are open again, and it seems the culture is back and it has 25 years to catch up on. Thank you, Taghna Lkoll.

This is what your optimism looks like. You surely didn’t believe you won the election on positive thoughts alone did you?
