Everyone know by now what I think of Fenech Adami’s national reconciliation.

But I would say other people carry a larger share of the blame. This sort of thing is never the work of one man alone. You need an army of intellectuals, historians, journalists, government officials and professionals. There was a collective decision to forget the past and to be nice to the nasty villains of yesteryear. I suspect many people would have done it anyway, including the Nationalist Party’s chief ideologues.

Because they banished violence of action from their ideological universe. To condemn, to prosecute and throw in jail is violent action. I don’t know if it was Christian doctrine, or if they were saving their own skins because they were compromised, or if it was the fruit of ignorance, or even if they feared a total collapse of the state.

You would be surprised how many people we both know have succumbed to the brainwashing and now think of Mintoff as some kind of historic figure who was essential at the time, a stage we had to go through, and who ultimately meant well with his wholly necessary actions.

Eddie Fenech Adami’s decision on reconciliation – unlike his choice of Finance Minister – was quite correct.

Only brainless people who’d vote Lejber anyway believe Mintoff was a saviour and his regime was the ‘Golden Years’.

So much so, that Lejber were only briefly trusted with government for the next 25 years.

Had he chosen otherwise, this would have been unlikely, in my opinion. The next big choice will be Simon Busuttil’s.

Personally, I’d be disappointed if Lejber appointees weren’t shown the door with 10 seconds of his being sworn-in.
