But isn’t that what Malta’s entire selling point has been since the mid-90s? Since 1964, there has been a total decoupling between money and refinement.

“Nigbdu l-investiment”, they gush, but it’s never “nigbdu l-klassi”, or “nigbdu l-genju” (as in the abstract noun “genius”. “Talent” is something you use for kiddies).

And yet it’s supposed to be the bedrock of Christian Democrat ideology.

I’ve got into the habit of pre-empting rebuttals, so here it is: In other, civilised countries, the link between money and refinement exists, and it is policy. Governments don’t just seek to attract billionaires. They seek to attract class, brains, innovation, investment in the arts, and that sort of thing.

Please stick to the point. We are talking about the sale of citizenship.

The reason it couldn’t happen in strong democracies like Britain, France or Germany is because the citizens of those democracies prize and value their citizenship. Even if the governments of those countries were to consider, in a moment of madness, selling British, French and American passports, they wouldn’t do so simply out of fear of how the public would react.
