Rather than ‘the system suited them’ I think they suffered from the same problem that the original legislators did: that of failing to understand that laws which rely almost entirely on the honourable behaviour of legislators are destined to be abused.

There should be laws, structures and policies in place which should ensure that those who become magistrates and judges are the right people and that there is no political or other motivation behind their appointment.

I’m sorry to say that the Nationalist Party cannot really complain about this (and other) situation because it was in government for 25 years and did not make the necessary changes to the law.

I hope it was out of laziness or inefficiency rather than because the system suited them.
