Malta is full of non-Maltese who have been living here for years. They don’t stand a chance of ever obtaining Maltese citizenship.

There are 6,000 non-EU citizens living and working in Malta at the moment, and most of them have been here for years.

Do you imagine their applications for Maltese citizenship will be accepted? No.

Why do you think that the law includes a specific clause for those who are married to Maltese, saying that they need to have been married for five years BEFORE APPLYING? Surely they could just apply on the grounds that they have been here for years, too, and forget the marriage clause.

But no, it doesn’t work that way unless your husband is the Minister for Citizenship.

People who have been married for five years will generally have been living in Malta even longer than that – they don’t get married the minute they arrive here.

And no, Codruta Cristian was not in Malta for “years” before she married Manuel Mallia. That makes it sound as though she has been here for a couple of decades. She gave birth to Mallia’s twins outside marriage (he was married to somebody else at the time, though separated) at the end of 2008 and had only been in Malta just about long enough to get herself up the duff before then.

Of course she would have had proper grounds for citizenship on the basis of her marriage and nobody would have questioned that had those two sharks conformed to the law and applied under Article 6 (marriage).

But she didn’t apply on the basis of her marriage. She applied on the basis of having been in Malta for a few years, during which time, incidentally, she never worked in a way that anyone knew of.

So are you advocating giving Maltese citizenship to all her Romanian lapdancer and stripper friends who have also been in Malta for years?

On what grounds, exactly?

Sai Liang was a Maltese citizen already when the Labour Party was elected to government.

Was she already married for 5 years with Konrad? Or was she given citizenship just like Codruta’s case?

It’s not for services to spouses, but for those who have rendered exceptional services to the Republic of Malta (or humanity), and FOR THEIR SPOUSES.

Who in their right mind would marry such an ogre?
