The Opposition should stop suggesting alternatuves because building this ‘university’ on land inside the development zone is still a very bad idea.

Our land is precious because it is limited. Building inside the development zone would take this space away from bona fide developers who need to build housing or business premises and this would then force them to put pressure to build inside ODZ.

We need to ask, “How can we justify giving land to a foreign entrepreneur?”

Will this give Maltese students added opportunities for further studies? Not likely.

This ‘university’ will most probably charge exorbitant fees.

Scholarships for about forty Maltesr students per year were mentioned. Just a tiny drop compared to the thousands who enrol at the University of Malta, MCAST, the Institute of Tourism Studies and the various franchises which universities like the University of London have set up here. (No, the University of Malta does not operate as a monopoly.)

So maybe these foreign students will leave economic benefit in the “Sawt”. Even this is hardly likely.

This ‘university’ will be run by a building contractor who specialises in building university villages, catering for most of the students’ needs: accommodation, everyday purchases, entertainment, etc.

Therefore most of the economic activity generated by these students will enrich Sadeen Education Investment Ltd and not Maltese businesses.

This is the way a number of campuses operate, and there is nothing bad in it. What is bad is Malta giving up land to help a Jordanian building contractor.

But surely there is something in this for someone in Malta. This almost certain possibility throws an even darker shadow on the whole affair.

So as you wrote, the Opposition should not try to provide solutions but should keep asking, ” Why is Malta doing this?”

I fear that the Prime Minister will ask the Leader of the Opposition to meet him and following this he will announce that an agreement has been reached with the Opposition on an alternative site.

It would be another debacle like the citizenship for sale scheme.
