What a con – “investing in education” when there is no university.

This is simply land speculation at the unquantifiable cost to us and our children.

Some are even justifying it by saying that there is no difference to Mater Dei Hospital. Besides the fact that I am not sure that the hospitalwas in ODZ in the first place, surely even the most stupid of persons can see there is a public purpose to the building of a hospital which is free to its patients.

One simply cannot compare a general hospital to a private commercial venture such as a fee-paying university, even if there is a university.

Oh it’s more than just angry at things happening under his watch.

He was lobbying, a few years ago, for the government to grant full financial autonomy to the University of Malta.

The plan included giving back properties which had belonged to the University.

Part of his pitch to the government was that the large tract of land where Mater Dei Hospital is built originally belonged to the University, and the government never really provided any adequate compensation.

What are we to say, then, when the government hands over public land to a Middle Eastern private individual?

If the expropriation of University of Malta property was unfair, what should we call this?

Juanito Camilleri has been fobbed off by the new Labour government. His project, which I fully support, is dead.

And the University of Malta will remain forever dependent upon the government budget, with the rector going cap in hand to the finance minister every October, while some smirking Jordanian crook races his supercar in the desert.

They should all hand in their gowns and resign, because the first quality of an academic should be intellectual honesty. The second is intellectual self-respect.
