Boring, I know, but for what its worth, there’s also the paddle-wheel which propelled the old Mississippi steamers.

Then there’s also the single paddle which looked like a breadboard with a handle. They used to come with inflatable (plastic) boats back in the day.

Not really. You need to click on that ‘Pedal boats & Paddle Boats’ to see why. The only boats listed are described as pedal-boats. The ‘paddle boat’ in the title is just there to pick up the search requests from people who think they’re paddle-boats.

With marine craft, ‘paddles’ are one thing only: a sort of double-ended oar or bar with a paddle at each end. Hence ‘paddle your own canoe’.

I think the confusion between ‘paddle’ and ‘pedal’ with these boats comes from the fact that people associate ‘paddle’ with ‘feet in water’ – as in ‘paddle in the water’.
