It’s not only because of the land that this thing is a bad idea. It’s because it’s bad in itself and would be bad anywhere.

The trouble with many Maltese, and that’s reflected in the Mintoffian mindset, is that they believe there is such a thing as a free lunch – that people will give us things for free, because we are so wonderful and unique, or because they are Our Friends, or – this is the best one – because they can afford it (“dak jiflah”).

Looks like they haven’t worked out yet that the richer somebody is, the less likely he or she is to give you something for nothing.

The way to do it is to be relentlessly negative about the government – literally rip them to shreds over every little thing – while being relentlessly positive about yourself.

That’s what Labour did under Muscat’s leadership between 2008 and 2013. His was the most savagely negative Opposition I ever remember, beating even Alfred Sant’s.

Sant’s problem was that he an all-round downer, and not just about the government.

The Americans do not share Joseph Muscat’s lust for dictators so they need to be given an incentive.

From what I gather, our prime minister would have jumped on the first plane to Baku as soon as he was invited and we the taxpayers would have paid for the trip.

If the Americans were paid to go to Azerbaijan and were lavished with gifts you can just imagine how much more generous the Azerbaijani government would be with those who go out of their own volition.
