Before 1974, practically every other shop in Malta was called The British Shoe Store, The British Bar, The British Grocer and The British Hardware Store.

Surely you don’t imagine they were set up with British investment.

States do not have copyright on the use of their name. If you go to London and set up something called The German Sausage Shop, good luck to you.

Nobody is going to ring the German Embassy in London to check out whether you really are German.
