Now which of these two could we do without: a power station to shore up and replace the ailing one at Marsa and power the booming economy, or a real estate/Schengen visa racket for rich Middle Eastern people, built on a huge chunk of ODZ.

People don’t read because they’re not interested in ideas other than their own. The blank look and lack of curioisty about their surroundings is what identifies a Maltese person in a crowd abroad, even when they’re not making any noise.

I put ignorance down to the low rate of reading among the population.

People simply do not read for pleasure and when they do it tends to be worthless romantic novels such as those written by Danielle Steele or onerous tomes (carried not read) with the intention to impress.

With children, Maltese parents seem to be more interested in getting them to robotically pass exams (plainly evident by the insane amount of private tutoring going on) rather than getting them to learn.

Little wonder that ignorance reigns supreme in Malta, even among the educated.
