Hang on a minute. John Bercow is an MP so he is “the Honourable” by virtue of that. And he is a member of the Privy Council, hence “Right Honourable”.

Anglu Farrugia is neither.

Is the Speaker of the House (Malta), in that capacity, given the title “Honourable”?

Yes. “Binja” was first used as a translation of “estate”, as in “binja tal-gvern” = “housing estate”. I see no parliament complex. I see a single building. So it’s “bini”, and the Akkademja can go to hell.

‘Mr Speaker’ is the correct form of address, but on a commemorative plaque – if it is necessary to include him at all, which it wouldn’t be in the home of the Westminster model and the more important of its offshoots – it should be ‘Angelo Farrugia, Speaker of the House’.

I always hated the wird ‘binja.’ For the longest time I didn’t even know what it meant.

I can never get myself to use it.

It’s “dan il-bini” rather than “din il-binja.” Who decides on the gender of things? L-ASSembleja tal-Malti?
