They’re far more comfortable cutting ribbons with the Chinese ambassador than with the US president. That’s the Malta=business mantra at work there.

Labour, on the other hand, has multiplied its international links since 1998. Always with the oligarchs and dictators, to be sure.

This is why I insist it’s all about the money. China offers F.L.U.S.. Therefore China = good. The US offers the Bill of Rights. Therefore x’jimpurtani.

It is about pro or anti Americanism.

America stood for freedom and the west, which is why the Malta Labour Party hated it and the PN saw it as a natural ally.

The Labour Party/government is in complete conflict with American values.

You saw the perfect illustration of that in the way the press, politicians and members of the public got their information about the ‘American university’ from DePaul because we couldn’t get it from our own government or from its spiritual fellows, the Jordanians.

So this is not about pro- or anti-Americanism.

They don’t understand that there are social distinctions that have nothing to do with money and material trappings.

This particular ambassador was especially vulnerable to all that because she was monopolized immediately on her arrival by the Taghna Lkoll crowd and thinks that theirs is the socially acceptable opinion.

She has no idea, quite literally, how and where somebody like me fits in to the equation.
