Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s driver/security guard is a case in point. He’s a soldier, but runs a security company and for years he moonlighted as a bouncer at Gianpula, the nightclub owned by a 50% shareholder of Malta Today.

What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. So for example, police constables could now perform private work as security officers in nightclubs, tax officials could provide tax consultancy to private clients, social security officials could work part-time with private insurance companies, health and safety officials could work for private construction contractors, lawyers at the Attorney General’s office could provide their services to private clients, and so on.

This will contribute to a happier complement of government officials who would serve the people more efficiently and with a smile.

I mean, Franco Mercieca is by all accounts a first class ophthalmologist, but he’s not the only one.

And anyway if he wants to serve his patients so loyally, then he has a choice to make.
