That cannot be less true. As his contemporary, I can tell you that it was the other way round: he and his brother were not allowed out into the street to play with the rest of us – almost every house in the neighbourhood had children our age in it those days, and we congregated in the streets – because they were made to study continuously rather than ‘wasting their time’. They were kept in the shop to study, monitored by their parents, in full view of the rest of us running around outside. We didn’t have a clue about social distinctions – it was all the same to us.
