I’ve checked the OED to be absolutely sure and they give definition 1.2 of ‘platter’ as:

A meal or selection of food placed on a platter, especially one served in a restaurant: ‘dinner was a bowl of soup and a cold platter’

I wonder if it’s just that the upper class choose not use the word that way and look down people who do.

HAHA I’ve made fun of the word for years, couldn’t agree more.

They love them, another of those things that they wrongly associate with being ‘posh’ whilst in reality they’re drinking at some ghastly place like Medasia or Hugo’s.

That’s because you see ‘platter’ as just another word, but it is not. It’s a cultural signifier. It conjures up a whole lot of things, and describing exactly what would have me here for the best part of the day, so forget it.

And then there’s the incorrect use of the word itself: ‘platter’ is the physical dish, but Maltese restaurants, cafes and people think it is a description of the contents of the dish. This is like sitting at table and saying, “Shall we have a bowl?” when what you want is soup.

“Niehdu pletter?”

Sorry, but I can’t stand it. It’s just so daft. If you want cheese and cold cuts, say you want cheese and cold cuts, not a ‘pletter’.
