Who would those people be? This is the age-old (well, since the Republic) problem of the president. We have 420,000 people to choose among and yet we always end up with an MP.

As for reforming the electoral system, there is a very simple and effective way in which voting choices can be improved, without changing a single law. That is for parties to choose to have a limited list of candidates in each district, according to the maximum number they’re likely to elect.

What use are a dozen or more candidates if ten of them only got to O Level standard, and the remaining two are potential or actual bazuzli? Let us have a maximum of two or three. That will avoid the infighting, and the party will have to do some culling of its own instead of relying on the people. Because the people vote like a Xarabank audience and will give us a Xarabank parliament.

If it happens, I expect it to be the Nationalist Party. But I’m not holding my breath.

It doesn’t need a lightning strike. A few years ago I got a brain tumour. I was left with bald patch and a scar which still aches. Benign, they said. Yeah, right. These things never really give up until you’re dead.

At least a lightning strike is quick.
