In reply to Daphne Caruana Galizia. Miss Malta was a hamallu contest from the outset. There were those who were asked to participate in its very first edition and refused to do so because of that set up.

I remember another occasion when Policeman number 5 ran after an old couple who were trying to get away from him. They stumbled and fell to the ground. The Policeman began to kick them. I went up to read the Policeman’s number and thought he’d stop if I did that.

He did stop kicking them and ran after me instead. I ran away from him but when I turned my head to check where he was, I saw him getting a thick chain out of his pocket which he used to whip me on the back.

This was in Mintoff’s time, also in Valletta.

I’ll never forget that face.
