I agree, the origin is American. The Maltese version is a literal translation: anzjan/anzjana mean “senior” and anzjanita’ means “seniority”.

Americans have their own vocabulary and one could add many more to the two examples you quoted. US English, however, has an influence on UK English, Canadian English, Australian and NZ English etc. It contributes to make English the wonderful international language that it is.

Most black people can’t even sing, just as most white people can’t. People are people.

You forget that so-called ‘black Americans’ have just as much ‘white blood’ in them as black at this stage. It’s just that dark colouring and certain features are the result of dominant genes. It doesn’t mean the recessive genes are not there.

Minnesota is or was Little Norway, but nobody speaks of Norwegian Americans.

And the very many Maltese people with an English parent or grandparent don’t call themselves or think of themselves as a separate category to the rest of us, called Anglo-Maltese.

Very many Maltese people are descended from individuals who were enslaved in Malta (I certainly am), but we’re not marked out from the rest as a separate category because the slaves in Malta looked like the Maltese and to this day you can’t tell who is descended from slaves and who is not.

The real reason it’s incorrect is that they are not African at all. They are American.

The fact that your descendants were originally from Africa, 200 years earlier, does not make you African yourself.

Imagine the chaos in Mediterranean countries if we had to use that kind of descriptor.

A real African American is somebody like Barack Obama: Kenyan father, American mother.
