Read Ranier's article in The Times yesterday, and then read Simon Mercieca's article in The Malta Independent earlier in the week.

Ranier's strong and clear argument comes at a very necessary point. I found Simon Mercieca's point of view revelatory and so disappointing, and told him so.

I find that Simon Mercieca is just not equipped with a broad enough perspective, however academically qualified he in fact is.

Such people wield considerable influence and an innocently misguided point of view is a terrible danger.

People in Malta have this fantastic ability to see, at best, till the tips of their noses.

What I appreciate in Ranier Fsadni, is that he is distinctly not like that. He has the benefit not only of an extremely perceptive mind, a water-tight memory, being consistently well-read and a with good grip on history jointly with his academic field, but importantly, he has the capacity to extrapolate and strategise towards a resultant unfolding vision.

The layman's focus is generally zoomed in on a close focus, Ranier generally offers a perspective that IS broad and overseeing: that is his forte.

I find him and Daphne to be the best columnists in Malta. Whilst on very rare occasions I do not agree with his view ( one of the Zonqor point series to do with compromise, Hollande, the stance on Libya prior to Malta's support for the revolution ), his perspective is not designed for side-taking, it is designed to provide flavour and direction: the two strategic notions that are at the broadest point of focus, and uncommon within our population.

I'd love to see the both of you at a game of chess.

You're actually quite similar.
