Sheers are a very Maltese ‘let’s not let the neighbours look in’ obsession. It’s the equivalent of Britain’s ‘lace curtains’, if you like.

So you draw the curtains open, but then leave the sheers closed ‘biex in-nies ma jharsux gewwa’. What is that about?

Aside from the fact that nobody uses curtains anymore outside Malta, except in heritage homes – check your interiors magazines – when you want the light in, you pull your curtains open, and when night falls, you draw them closed again. So sheers serve no purpose.

In this day and age, with draught-proof windows, curtains serve no purpose either. If you want to keep out the sun, use blinds. And if you want to stop the neighbours looking in at night, close the shutters (or pull down the blind).

The sole purpose of curtains is to keep out draughts from windows and doors. If you don’t have draughts, you don’t need curtains.

Spend the money on something else instead. Not having curtains also brings your home into the 21st century.

So you can use the fabric to make racy lingerie for pole-dancers. Dual use item.
