Maltese men’s egos aren’t just fragile in the presence of women. It can be men too. The slightest criticism, or even a suggestion for improvement, and they lash out like schoolboys. Lawyers’ egos are particularly fragile. Avoid any involvement, and avoid lawyer friends altogether, unless you’re prepared to fawn and praise continually.

Not all men, but so very many of them that I often wonder about this.

They are beyond fragile – they actually become hysterical, bitchy, violently aggressive and pathologically obsessed with their hatred to the point where it is obvious to everyone except themselves that the level of fixation is sick.

I think our southern Mediterranean chauvinistic and misogynistic culture is largely to blame.

Reading something like that in the context of a similar pattern of behaviour, you understand how so many women end up dead at the end of a man’s gun, knife or fist in the southern Mediterranean.

Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando has a similar pathology.

This is what happens to people when they think of a newspaper as a business and are in it for the money. They forget their original journalistic instinct (and he had one) and that they are there to serve the public. Saviour Balzan and I are on the same side – the public – but he’s forgotten that. He has decided to join the Labour Party in furthering the propaganda that I am a PN functionary (well, ha ha ha to that) while he seems very confused indeed as to whose side he is on. Not the readers, that’s for sure.
