When I jammed my hand on the horn, she signalled to me that I should wait. She moved very slowly into the hotel, then moved very slowly out again, followed by a family of tourists. I saw the Tourist Mother look at the car in the middle of the road, look at the empty space near the pavement alongside it, and gesture to the woman that she should move the car into the space and clear the road. I also saw the woman gesture that there was no need. That’s when I jammed my hand on the horn again and left it there.

By now there was a trail of cars behind us and the tourist family were going in and out of the car, switching seats, fumbling around, with the woman making no attempt to hurry them up.

I leaned out of the window and said to the woman that she is an egocentric savage with the manners of a goat, and told her passengers to hurry the hell up because they were breaking the law just as they would be in their own damned country.

When I was a child, the colonial British called the Maltese ‘goats’ and the Maltese objected. But boy, were they right.

Greece, in fact, remains essentially unable to understand the British/Scandinavian form of democracy, which evolved from social organisation and cultural attitudes and goes way beyond the parliamentary vote.

Greek society seems predisposed to the extremes of totalitarianism and anarchy.
