That’s my point. If they strive for excellence everywhere else, why accept sloppy spelling? That sign must have cost them a couple of hundred euros.

It’s not just some A4 sheet printed off at home. It’s in full public view, it’s meant to attract customers, and it’s embarrassing.

You know, the people who leave assimilated words from other languages intact, spelling ‘n’ all.

Although renown means well-known, the similarity in pronunciation is accidental and is certainly the cause for the confusion. Apparently the word originates from the French renomer, to name (mention) multiple times, to make famous.

Even a quick glance at a SEC English B paper will show you how low levels have fallen over the years and I’m not simply talking about the pathetic 180-word essay which students need to write.

How can they be expected to write a 12,000 word dissertation (in English) five years down the line?
