They are called water towers and they are still used and built to date. Even Australia has them (at least Google says so). The designs are different and some have different purposes but they are still used.

Water tanks, similar to the one's we use, are used in many places but are hidden from view due to property construction. As said the practice should not be stopped because it is necessary.

In Malta we do have an efficient and functional water distribution system - I never had a "water cut" in the past 5 years - but the tank on the roof ensures that supply is equal in on all the property.

As said, I don't find them an eyesore: Malta's urban landscape is so uneven, irregular and many a time ugly, that the water tanks on top are simply part of the landscape.

After all it all depends on the property's owner. If they care about the aesthetics of their property, they hide the water tank in such a manner that it does not disturb the property's aesthetic.

Something off topic. Those water tanks on rooftops are hideous. They are reminiscent of past times when the water supply was unreliable. We should not be needing them now. I've never seen them being used in developed countries.

You simply connect your cold water supply and your water heater directly to the mains supply. If you need a stable water pressure there are other ways to go about it without ruining the landscape of a whole country.

In Cyprus it's even worse. They elevate the water tanks by a few feet using a metal frame to improve water pressure. The result is a horrific contraption on top of most houses. It's appalling.
