In reply to Daphne Caruana Galizia. Immigration officers in Goteborg, Sweden, did that in the past (Seventies/Eighties) at the ferry arriving from Fredrikshavn, Denmark. From the shoes, apparently, they could pick out which disembarking passengers were Swedes or had been living in Sweden, and others.
