The real problem is that all these posing men look like they’re trying to appeal sexually to other men, not women, even when they are not because they are heterosexual.

And lots of Maltese women, weirdly, seem to be more attracted to the gay aesthetic and subtext than they are to macho.

I don’t think that in this particular context social background has much to do with it.
Some of the worst offenders in this respect are women from a social background roughly similar to mine, but who are stuck in some kind of time warp that renders them unable to see that what is appropriate at 20 is not appropriate at 40 or 50.
The older they grow, the worse they become on Facebook, panicking about losing their looks/glamour – a natural process which we all just have to embrace – and curating photographs for Facebook upload even more avidly.
If I were in my 20s now and with my mother doing that on Facebook, I would be the first to rugby-tackle her away from her iPad. But many of these women had their children late and so their children are not old enough to tell their mothers that their behaviour is cringeworthy.

Haven’t you noticed that in Malta, people encourage it?

They actively seek to be taken as sexy and suggestive. It’s not just politicians. Women my age clutter their Facebook Timelines with carefully chosen photographs and then are thrilled to bits at the wash of ‘sexy’ and ‘beautiful’ and ‘always lovely’.

They don’t realise how odd and stupid this looks from the point of view of normality.

With politicians it’s worse, because they think it’s OK to behave like the rest of the dumb population, which would be wrong to begin with (because they are in a different position), let alone when the rest of the dumb population are wrong and daft themselves.
