The High Commissioner should not ‘disqualify’ Winter Moods. This is not a tendering or competitive process. The High Commissioner should understand that it does not look right when he commissions his wife’s brother’s band, and that this EMBARRASSES HIS POSITION.

When you are in a grace-and-favour position (or even a career diplomat), you don’t embarrass that position to do your relatives favours.

Whether this is fair or unfair to his relatives is beside the point. The sole consideration should be the protection of the High Commission’s reputation.

Ivan Grech appeals mainly to middle-aged people because they are his contemporaries. They don’t think he looks old and ridiculous because they are the same age and wish to believe they are young. I appear to be an exception in this regard because I stick to the reality that 50 is 50 and not the new 30.

Winter Moods may or may not be Malta’s best band, but they have not been commissioned to play in Malta. They will be playing in London where the competition in the bands and entertainment stakes is – how can I put this tactfully? – more than a little fiercer.

Everyone is related and everyone knows each other. You’ll be hard pressed to put two completely unrelated persons together in Malta.

I don’t share your concern in this case. Winter Moods (despite your blatant ageism in your comments) remains one of the best bands in Malta and that is what you want to put on when done in an official capacity.
